Coastal Container Named “Biggest Loser” in 2018 Battle of the Buildings

Coastal Container, a packaging solutions company, today announced their second consecutive recognition as a “Biggest Loser” in the Battle of the Buildings competition. The Battle of the Buildings competition is organized by the West Michigan chapter of the U.S. Green Buildings Council and aims to encourage and recognize energy-efficient building practices among industrial, commercial and multi-family buildings. Coastal Container reduced their energy consumption by 28.71% in 2017 earning the business first place in the manufacturing category.

“We’re always looking for ways to increase our efficiency and partner with the local company, Foresight, to help us determine the best routes,” said Curt Shosten, Coastal Container supply chain manager. “We partner with Haworth to utilize their waste saw dust to run in our boiler system to heat our building, saving us thousands in natural gas expenses.”

Battle of the Building participants include manufacturing facilities, office buildings, libraries and hospitals. The contest requires building owners to measure, track and report monthly energy consumption. Participants also engage in energy-saving activities including building improvements, optimizing operations and maintenance and encouraging occupants to conserve energy. Among the activities are workshops, led by local and national leaders, to highlight the latest energy-saving technologies. In 2016, participants cut $2.4 million in utility costs through energy efficiency.

The West Michigan Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council will acknowledge winners at the 2018 Michigan Energy Summit on April 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the JW Marriott in Grand Rapids.
