Corrugated Converting Machine Operator

Purpose of the job 

Safely and effectively assist in the setup and operation of complex converting equipment to meet customer specifications for corrugated products including converted boxes Actively participate in and support problem solving and continuous improvement efforts. 

Essential Job Responsibilities

Safety – Model safe behaviors always; including the donning of personal protective equipment, following Lock-out Tag-out procedures, and working to equipment-specific operating standards.

Schedule – Review daily production schedule; make recommendations for optimizing the schedule to meet cost, quality and service goals. Prepare equipment, materials and work area to complete the schedule efficiently. Report any schedule interruptions and/or machine downtime.

Set-up and Operation – Ensure work orders are completed safely, on time, and with good quality. Perform a variety of setup activities including the adjustment of equipment settings, printing plates, dies, and conveyance equipment. Provide direction to other operators and/or assistants. Monitor converting process to ensure quality production at established run rates and uninterrupted runs. Quickly troubleshoots problems to minimize downtime.

Quality – Inspect paper board to confirm specification for job order and visually inspect for damage and defects, including, but not limited to: cracked scores, cut liner or medium, loose edges or liner, oil, blisters, wrinkles, wash board, warp, clean slits, proper score depth, and appearance. Perform routine quality checks to ensure products meet specifications. Complete quality check sheets completely and accurately.

5-S – Clean and organize work area daily. Submit maintenance work orders for needed repairs. Maintain 5-S standards in the work area and coach others to maintain a clean and organized work area at all times.

Maintenance – Perform daily, weekly, and/or monthly preventive maintenance activities consistent with documented work standards.

Material Handling – Supports production in paper identification, loading, feeding, stacking and bundling when necessary. Ensure work-in-process or finished goods are moved as required (pallet jack); may be asked to gain certification in the use of electric lifts or powered forklifts.

Continuous Improvement – Participates in regular team problem solving and continuous improvement activities. Looks for and communicates continuous improvement opportunities and/or variance issues.

Team / Adult-to-Adult – Establish productive working relationships with all team members. Resolve conflicts and production problems in an Adult-to-Adult manner.

Learning – Develop and maintain competence on multiple converting machines and a working knowledge of the Quality Management System including all relevant policies, procedures and work instructions. Teaches other team members to perform all job functions competently.

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience Requirements

  • 1 year corrugated converting experience required
  • Manufacturing experience essential

Essential Competencies

  • Excellent mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to obtain a lift truck license
  • Complex machine set-up experience essential
  • Ability to interpret 2D drawings and specifications
  • Basic math skills, especially fractions
  • Basic computer skills
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal
